Facebook, Privacy and the Wild Wild Web

Facebook recently unveiled several changes to its service that give users more sharing options, but in the process the company demonstrated what many have come to believe is its intentional disregard for user privacy.

This mistake feels a lot like Facebook’s February 2009 debacle when the company changed its user agreement in an “all take, no give” arrangement that gave the company the right to use, in perpetuity, all information shared by its users on the site. Users rebelled and Facebook backed down immediately.

But this time it’s different. With these recent updates, Facebook has given users two important things: Easier ways to share and participate among communities of interest within the network and more privacy and protection settings to accommodate this new structure.

Facebook’s mistake is two-fold. First, the default privacy settings for the new Facebook are not Friends, Friends of Friends, or all of Facebook, but the entire Internet. Second, Facebook has provided no easy road map for just how to navigate to the 50 privacy settings in order to choose from among the more than 170 privacy options.

Users’ confusion over the default settings and how to change them, along with lackluster explanations of the benefits of the new changes, has created the usual uproar we’ve come to expect each time Facebook tweaks our home away from home.

Unfortunately for Facebook, this update has also created what analysts suspect is an increase in the number of users wanting to delete their Facebook accounts. The number of searches for “how do i delete my facebook account [sic]” have increased dramatically since the changes were announced, and a mass exodus from Facebook has been scheduled for May 31.

Nothing On the Web Is Free

Facebook has over 400 million users, and after the mass exodus, the site will have over 400 million users.

The changes Facebook has made are part of Facebook’s inevitable monetizing strategy. And that’s the point. Nothing about Facebook is free. Facebook has never been in the game not to make money. And it’s finally doing so. This year the company is expected to have revenues of between .2 and billion. And yes, some of that will be profit.

Facebook will ultimately strike the necessary balance between its bottom line and its users. They always do. But what users have to realize is that one fact will remain: Facebook will make money off of the information users share on its site.

To those for whom this is a bad thing, Facebook is not the place to be. Profile information is the most valuable information for marketers on the Web, and no single Web service has more of this type of information than Facebook. Facebook will continue along its path to use this information to make money in order to stay in business and to continue to give users the services they sign up for in droves.

The critics are right: Facebook wants to make mountains of cash. But they can only do it if its users are happy.

The Wild Wild Web

A lot of the information you share on Facebook – your email address, phone number, physical address – is already public on the web and would remain so if Facebook went away tomorrow. This information was there before Facebook and exists online independently of Facebook.

Take a look at Pipl.com. Type in your name or the name of your best friend, or your worst enemy, and see what pops up. A recent search on this writer’s name produced the following information:

Background reports from Intelius.com
Personal profiles from MySpace, Spokeo, LinkedIn, Members-Base, Bebo and Flickr
Email addresses from Inelius that are so old I caught myself wanting to say they pre-date the Web

Many sites like this have emerged over the years. Pipl, Spokeo and Zillow.com, to name a few, all publish information many users feel is private. But in fact, it is not. It’s quite public, and sites like these aggregate this information from public sources.

Which leads to a not-so-recent trend in social media, but one that is about to see the roof blow off because of yet another new initiative by Facebook.

The trend is social media aggregation, where information from different social media sites is pulled together in one location so that it can be more easily digested. Many aggregation services, like Gist, FriendFeed and NetVibes, offer tools and widgets that let users combine messages, search multiple social media sites at once, track friends, and even access their profile data all from one place, all in an attempt to simplify an individual’s social media participation.

“If we can take these separate maps of the graph and pull them all together,” says Zuckerberg, as reported by CNET.com, “then we can create a Web that’s smarter, more social, more personalized, and more semantically aware.”

He goes on to say, “These connections aren’t just happening on Facebook, they’re happening all over the Web, and today with the Open Graph we’re bringing all these things together.”

If you use Facebook, you might be surprised to find you’re already participating in its new social graph. Go to Account > Privacy Settings and click on Applications and Websites. Good Rules of Thumb

Just consider that anything you say on Facebook is public, and don’t say anything that you would have to whisper to anyone who you’re dining with at an outdoor cafe.

Each time you allow a Facebook app to access your profile information, read the Terms and Conditions for that app. Apps are bound by neither Facebook’s Privacy Policy nor its Terms and Conditions. They are third-party relationships, and when you share your Facebook information with them you do so independently of Facebook. Apps are how a lot of profile info leaks out of Facebook. Facebook should be clearer about this and should be more concerned for users’ privacy when it comes to third-party apps, and it wouldn’t be surprising if their approach to apps changes sometime soon.

Other sites offering FacebookConnect are safe. FacebookConnect is a service that lets users enjoy their Facebook relationships on other websites. Users can sign in with their Facebook username and password and discover what their friends find interesting on a particular site. The third-party website does not have access to your Facebook profile information.

Thanks to Facebook’s latest update, Groups, tech rock stars Mike Arrington (TechCrunch) and Jason Calacanis (Mahalo), now belong to NAMBLA — that’s the acronym most often associated with North American Man/Boy Love Association, or for “South Park Fans,” The North American Marlon Brando Look-Alikes.

Here, however, it stands for little more than some clever code monkey’s attempt to out the failings of Facebook’s latest upgrade. As Calacanis points out via his blog, neither he nor Arrington asked to join this new Facebook group — they were simply added.

That’s the initial problem with this new group system — though it’s hardly the privacy invasion some may paint it to be. For example, Calacanis “friended” the joker who put him on this faux NAMBLA group — you can’t add someone to a group if they’re not already your Facebook friend. Does that mean you need to better monitor your friends? Well, yeah.

But is it evil? Well, we’ll try and break it down and you can decide.

New groups vs. old groups … wait … what?

Old groups: These are for anyone and everyone. You’ve probably been invited to or “Like” a bunch of old-timey groups you’ve long forgotten — just another member along with hundreds or thousands of people you don’t know, all of which gave the thumbs up icon to “Things Brittany From ‘Glee’ Says” or “FarmVille Link Trading of Rare Foals, Calves, Eggs, & 7-11 Codes.”

Anyone can join and anyone can suggest or invite you to join. Anyone can post on the group’s wall or forums and read what others are posting. There’s no real privacy, because, well, anybody can join. And even if they don’t join, Facebook friends can see by your profile what groups you belong to or “Like.”

New groups: You can either start a new club or get added by a Facebook friend who is a member. You can’t join an established new group without being added by a member, and you can’t see group activity if the group is marked “closed” or see who’s a member if the group is marked “secret.” Hence, the notion of added privacy.

Why should I even care about this “new” group thing?

This new-fangled Facebook group is like being on old-timey Facebook — that tiny pocket of online privacy that made you join in the first place. You know, before Facebook turned into MySpace (sans glitter gifs). Back then, the youngs joined to hang out with their close circle of friends and the olds, ever wary of the Interwebs, joined to see those pictures of their grandkids you were always saying you’d send but never did.

Then God (or Satan, whatevs) invented FarmVille and suddenly we friended everybody because we needed indentured servants to help till our virtual fields and adopt our orphaned purple calves.

Now we’re friends with perfectly nice people in, like, Australia who nonetheless we will never meet IRL and would rather not share delivery-room action shots of our recent childbirth.

New Facebook groups allows you to create a new group, keep it private and invite those three other family members with whom you’d like to share those intimate family photos. Other uses? Facebook suggests:

Create shared docs for a class project
Chat with all the members of your band at once
Chat privately
Control who sees what

Don’t other websites offer similar services?

Well, yes. But many of them cost money, and this is on Facebook. You’re already there. Now Facebook gives you less reason to log off than ever before. Convenient for you, great for Facebook. As for the rest of the Internet’s ecosystem…well, that’s a whole other “Oprah.”

Gotcha. So how do I start a Facebook group?

Go to www.facebook.com/groups
Click “Create group”
Decide whether your group is 1) Open: Anyone can see membership and activity 2) Closed: Non-group members can see membership, but not activity or 3) Secret: Membership and activity is not shared with nonmembers.
Invite friends by typing names into the invite prompt. (Again, you can only add current Facebook friends, but your friends can in turn invite their friends.)

Wait. “Invite” friends?

Oh, yeah. You don’t so much “invite” as “shanghai ” your Facebook friends, who automatically appear as members to your group, whether they want to be there or not — and will stay members until they actively make the effort to quit. (See NAMBLA example, above.) While group membership doesn’t seem to show up on the public version of user profiles, open group activity will show up on a member’s wall.

The quick lesson? If someone invites you to a group you don’t want to be in, quit as fast as you can. But make sure you really don’t want to belong.

Ok, I quit a group I was added too. Then I changed my mind. Can I join again?

No. Yes. Maybe. Here’s where things got glitchy — at least on our test run.

According to Facebook, once you turn down an “invite” (or rather “quit,” after your Facebook friend made you a member) your friend cannot add you again. You must contact Facebook for a second chance. (Yeah, good luck with that.)

Can I kick out a member I invited, then add that person again?

According to Facebook, no. I tried this on my own super secret group “People who like bunnies.” It got weird:

I added myself, deputy editor Wilson Rothman, and my boss.
I then deleted my boss — as a test, not because he necessarily does or doesn’t like bunnies.
Then I added my boss back to my “People who like bunnies” group, and contrary to what Facebook claimed, he added back just fine. But …
I attempted to delete my boss again, and even though I was quite clearly clicked the “X” under my boss’s name, I was deleted from my own group.
Wilson valiantly attempted to add me back and was not allowed. Through no fault of my own, I am now banned from the very “People who like bunnies” group I founded.

Groups is new, you’ve got to budget for glitches. And I do not have the kind of time or attention span often required to attempt any kind of response from Facebook’s customer service. (Ladies, am I right?)

Downsides? Certainly this new Groups thing has downsides!

Well, of course! What kind of world would this be if we couldn’t complain about Facebook? Besides the obvious (to everyone outside of The Facebook Corporation) that users should receive invites to groups instead of having to remove themselves from groups they didn’t join, there’s the spam potential. Think of all the e-mails and notifications you’ll now receive from all those groups you’ve “joined.” Yep. You’re probably going to unfriend a lot of people before all of this blows over.

What about my privacy?! My precious online privacy?!

If you’re still suffering under the illusion that you actually have it, Facebook is attempting to play along at this juncture.

Can fellow group members who are not my Facebook friends actually see my private info?

Non-friend group members can see your group activity, obviously. But if they try to view your profile, they’ll get the same “public” page that anyone and everyone can see.

So, aside from being forced to “join” groups without first being asked, what can go wrong?

Well, plenty if you’re the kind of person who “friends” Facebook jokers looking to add you to faux NAMBLA groups designated as “open.”

Also, despite recent public contrition, Facebook does have that dubious history of making private things public with little or no notice to its users.

There’s also the perpetual possibility of some conflagration of unfortunate circumstances that ends up opening your most personal online stuff to the public through no human or computer malevolence whatsoever … just Mercury in retrograde doin’ what it does best.

Yes both Facebook and Twitter are social media platforms, and they are both meant to develop relationships, followings, friends and connect with like minded people. However, if you treat the two exactly the same, you will see different results with both.

I continually here more and more people saying that they’re leaving Twitter, Twitter doesn’t work, it’s only a fad and Facebook will rule all. Almost sounds like “Lord of the Rings” one site to rule them all.

This completely baffles me as I I look at the continued growth of Twitter, the number of people and businesses that continue to use it, and the number of success stories I hear about through the use of Twitter.

At the same time you hear the same stories on Facebook. What you don’t find, is many that are successful on both platforms. If they are, you can easily analyze the difference in how they use the two platforms.

Another reason for people wanting to leave Twitter and go to Facebook, I think has more to do with the hot trend of Facebook Pay-Per-Click marketing going on at the moment. That I believe has more to do with the Google Slaps than anything else.  We could very well be hearing stories of the Facebook slaps by next year.

Facebook allows for more open and longer conversations, it has the ability to share in house the videos, pictures and some content of your life. It also allows for more people to get in a single conversation opening up a continued discourse.

Many people find this to be the main reasons why Facebook is so much better than Twitter. Others will simply only use Twitter as a gateway to Facebook. Meet them on Twitter and try to force them over to Facebook from there. Keeping Twitter entirely automated.

There in-lies part of the rub. If you have Twitter entirely automated, you’re forgetting about the social aspect of it. Twitter offers a real-time search function for what people are asking about, wondering about, talking about. Facebook doesn’t allow for that. If you categorize your followers into different lists and groups breaking down the flow of information coming through, you can better engage with those that you’re following allowing you to pinpoint their needs, help out when you can and add value to their lives.

Facebook is a little harder to categorize your friends and break down the different categories that way. Facebook also limits you to 5000 friends, then you have to move on to a Fan Page.  Some people don’t like Fan page’s unless the person really is a type of celebrity.  And many people even with 5000 friends are far from that Fan Fair status to have a successful page. Other new people are driven straight to a fan page, and feel funny liking a fan page of someone they don’t even know. By using the term fan you’re putting a whole new level to the relationship.

Twitter allows for more ability to recommend your followers to others, through the invention of #FollowFriday. I have never seen something like that on Facebook, where I tell all my friends to friend another person. Again friendship sometimes has a little more importance labeled on it than simply following.

The biggest thing though is that, because of the difference between Facebook and Twitter, you can’t use them the same way. You have different conversations on Twitter than you do Facebook, you connect differently, you share differently. If you’re trying to do the same thing with both, only one will show results and you’ll want to blame the other service for your lack of results.

You should be treating and interacting with the two differently. I myself, have much more success with Twitter than I do Facebook, partly is due to my personality, partly is the people I’m following as opposed to my friends on Facebook. I also spend more time on Twitter than I do Facebook. I also spend zero time on any of the games that Facebook offers, have blocked all the frilly content messages and get only spam in my inbox.

Another reason why I favor Twitter over Facebook is that I have many more tools at my disposal for clearing out those that I don’t want to hear from, that are only broadcasting and trying to shove their opportunity at me.  Facebook I don’t have as much freedom to easily scrub my list of the spammers, and because of the amount of spam, I tend to shy away from it more. Where I’ve been easily successful in eliminating that with Twitter allowing me to share value in my followers and those that I follow.

Everyone has different results and different preferences. Mine obviously is Twitter over Facebook, and I’m in a minority. But just because I’m in the minority doesn’t mean it doesn’t work or that it’s not effective. It just means more people haven’t figured out the differences themselves to have similar effects as those that are successful with it.

Overall I don’t think there should be a debate. Only a realization that not everything is right for everyone and that Facebook and Twitter are equally two different entities that need to be treated as such.

a. Activities: Put all your activities in using the drop down menu when you have an option, this will allow all Facebook members to find you searching the activities, the same goes for all the boxes in the personal info.
b. Interest: This is a great area to state every business interest; they will be searched on Facebook for example: Home Loans, Mortgage Reduction Programs if an individual wants to search for these then they should be found on the on Facebook and they will add you as a friend because they have commonalities or they are interested in the subject.
c. Favorite Music: Show what you like but you might be searched and added as a fan of a group and that might not be your area of expertise you want to attract, so limit entries.
d. Favorite TV Shows: You can get category specific like if you’re an investor maybe “Flip that House”.
e. Favorite Movies: I just put generalities like comedies, action or romance. Specifics keep you in searches on Facebook because if you put Star Trek then you might have Trekkies finding you, so unless you’re running Trekkie conventions or have Spock ears on now and then leave it out.
f. Favorite Books: This is a great opportunity to show your niche with books in your subject like “Rich Dad Poor Dad” if you’re an investor.
g. Favorite Quotations: Use some good one’s in your field if you need some help, (HOT TIP) Search Google “quotations in your niche”.
h. About Me: This is the best place to tell all about yourself and your passion for your niche. Spend some good time putting together a great paragraph and then let someone who knows you edit it for you. This may be uncomfortable, but it is very effective. Use the lock drag down to choose who see’s the email, you can see this to the right; I recommend and use only friends.
b. IM Screen Name(s): I leave blank, I can chat right on Facebook and if I need to give one I can through an email.
c. Mobil: I use a second line and only get real calls from real clients “Cool” and use only friends on the setting.
d. Address: I leave blank but if you had a brick and mortar store front put it in.
e. Websites: Add Business sites, social Marketing like Twitter, Linked In, Your Personal Facebook Fan pages and Blogs.

*Education and Work

a. College: Add all your colleges your alumni will find you and do business with you and seldom will a rivalry college sway a customer.
b. High School: Add your school
c. Employer: This is sometimes the only way to find out what someone does on Facebook and this is why all that I showed you has painted a picture of who you are and what you do even before you get here. If you own your own business put it in or your employer.
d. Position: CEO Etc.
e. Time Period: When you started at or created the company
f. Location: The location especially if you have a store front
g. Description: Add everything your company does or you personally do also.

Facebook Business Pages Demystified for Business Owners

Facebook is so popular that business owners can simply no longer consider it a site only appropriate for socializing and game playing.  In fact, in September 2010, Facebook surpassed Google in regards to the amount of time users spent on their site.  Facebook states that users spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook!

With 500 million active users, Facebook is the new behemoth on the Web. With its popularity across diverse age groups, integrated email application, and new Bing search integration, a Facebook user may simply no longer need to visit Google for Web searches or log off to use an email application. They may be able to experience the Web fully all from inside Facebook. With more than 50% of the active users logging into Facebook every day, according to Facebook, Facebook is now so important to your potential customers’ lives that it make sense for you as a business owner to have a presence where your prospects are hanging out on a daily basis.

Let’s clear up a few things that have confused business owners about Facebook. First, a Business Page is not to be confused with a personal profile. They are two separate entities and offer different options and ways to interact with friends and colleagues.

Are Business Pages also called Fan Pages?

Many of you that have been using Facebook for a while will remember that Facebook used to call Business Pages – Fan Pages. Additionally, it used to be that someone “fanned you”. Now they “like you”. Don’t get confused in thinking that a Fan Page is a different product than a Business Page they are one in the same.

All Facebook Business Pages start with the set up of a personal Facebook profile. That’s right, a personal profile! You can’t just jump to Business Page set up. The email address and name you use for your personal profile must be one tied to a person and not a catchall email like info@mydomain.com. Remember, that if you have an employee set up the personal profile portion for your Business Page, that you don’t want them to tie the new account to an email that you will not have access to if they leave the company.  If they do so and leave your employ, you could lose access to your Facebook Business Page, all of your accumulated fans, and information without recourse.

For set up I typically recommend that one of business owners create a new email address specifically for Facebook set up. Once you have set up the personal Facebook profile, you are ready to get started. But, don’t take time to add information like education other details in this special account unless you plan on using it for your own personal use. You are just setting up this account to have a platform to launch and access your new Facebook Business Page.
While logged in to your new personal account, visit this link http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?campaign_id=368885149649&placement=pgall&extra_1=1. It will take you to the Facebook Business Page creation tool to actually create your new page.

On the right side of the creation page select under the heading the “Official Page” and mark “Create a Page for a:” and then finally select “local business”. Enter your page name and then tick the box next to the statement that says you are a legal business representative and allowed to own the page.  It is important to understand that the name you choose for the title of your Facebook Business Page will appear at the top of your finished page.

I recommend using proper spelling and no use of hyphens or underscores in your selected name. It used to be we had to enter hyphens or the spaces would show as non-HTML characters in the page name and URL, but Facebook has grown beyond that need now. For example, enter in “My Business Name” (note the proper use of spacing and capitalization), not “My-Business-Name”. This name will appear in your new Business Page URL as well.
Once you click create, the next page you see will be your brand new Facebook Business Page. It is that simple. Later after you’ve had 25 people “Like” your page you will be able to select a vanity URL, but we’ll talk about that later.

Do my personal updates show on my Business Page?

After you have set up your Facebook Business Page, you can “lock down” your personal profile that was used to launch your Business Page. To do so, just you alter the privacy settings in the personal account to not show your personal information to others who are not “approved” friends.

When Facebook was first created many business owners including myself, started with a Facebook personal profile for their business. Now that Facebook has created Business Pages, you can easily change the privacy settings on your old personal profile to funnel your business traffic to your new Facebook Business Page keeping your old personal profile now just for family and close friends.

When you change the privacy settings on the personal profile attached to your Business Page, it does not impact who can view information about your Business Page. Just as equally, if you post pictures of your kids on your Facebook personal profile that is the launch pad for your Business Page, and you have your personal profile limited to “friends only”, your kids’ photos will not appear on the wall of your Business Page.

Why exactly would a business owner want a Business Page and not just use a personal profile?

Several reasons to have a Facebook Business Page are: the ability to contact all people who “Like” or who “Fan” you with newsletter type notes with one click, interact with discussion questions like a forum, set up events and invite fans to attend, and even create specialized welcome and shopping pages. Your Business Page can almost be a mini website!
